CASE STUDY OF 100 JEWISH MEN FROM ZAWIERCIE POLAND

The data presented here is a list 100 Jewish men from Zawiercie, Poland.

The data was provided by Dan Burns who is conducting a research about the fate of these Jewish people. It is presented here with his permission.

Almost every man in the group worked at the Luftwaffe factory in the Zawiercie (Wartenau) Ghetto during the period 1941- 1943.

The last transport of Polish Jews from the Zawiercie Ghetto was On October 17, 1943. Thousand Jews were deported from Zawiercie Ghetto to the KL Auschwitz. After the SS selection at the Judenrampe between Auschwitz and Birkenau, 600 people were immediately gassed and cremated. The rest of the Jews were  registered in Birkenau. Two hundred and forty nine Jewish men out of this group were given tattoo numbers in the range of 157590 to 157838, and hundred and fifty two women were given tattoo numbers in the range of 65327- 65478.

Currently An academic study is being conducted about the fate of the hundred men that were deported on October 17-18, 1943 and  have serial or tattoo numbers in the range of 157590- 157838. A few of these men survived Auschwitz, the subsequent death marches and incarcerations in the Third Reich. The research is being conducted to properly assess the death rate of these 100 men, due to hunger, disease or execution in the Auschwitz sub-camp known as Golleschau. Important historical, biographical and genealogical information has been discovered about these hundred Jewish men.

These men went through the following camps during WWII, their birth date is estimated and their tattoo number is known:

bullet Born- in and around Zawiercie and the small towns near it- Zaglembie region of Poland
bullet Labor Camp-worked in the Schmelt Organization in the force-labor camp known as the Luftwaffe or Akcyna in Zawiercie (Wartenau in German) ghetto.
bullet Deported on October 17-18, 1943 from Zawiercie to Auschwitz-Birkenau
bullet Tattoo #’s- the tattoo numbers will be on the left fore-arm and between the serial number ranges 157590 to 157838.
bullet Auschwitz Sub camp- All these men were transported to the sub camp Golleschau in Poland on November 14-15, 1943.
bullet Other Camps- Some of them, were transported to Buchenwald, Dachua, Flossenburg-Plattling, Mauthausen, Oranienberg-Sachsenhausen, and Stuffhof after January 19, 1945.
